Muslim Scholars, including Imami theologians, have provided non-literal interpretations for religious texts in several cases. This is in most cases because they have considered the literal meaning of a Quranic verse or a hadith to be inconsistent with one of their beliefs, which is sometimes taken from religious teachings, sometimes drawn from theoretical or practical reason, and sometimes rooted in their sensory or empirical findings, and have preferred that belief to the literal meaning of that Quranic verse or hadith. This article, focusing on the works of al-Shaykh al-Saduq, al-Shaykh al-Mufid, and al-Sharif al-Murtada, analyzes and compares their non-literal interpretations, in which sensory beliefs are preferred to the literal meaning of religious texts. This analysis and comparison reveals similarities and differences in the theological approach of these prominent Imami theologians and gives a clearer image of the degree of their commitment to the literal meaning of Quranic verses and hadiths.
