Shiism in Indonesia has had a turbulent history. Some have considered the entry of Islam into this country through Shiism and Shiites, and many historical evidences can be seen as a confirmation of this, although in the following historical periods, we see the decline of Shiism in the Indonesian archipelago. In the contemporary era, the role of the Islamic Revolution of Iran and the political open space after Suharto should be considered as a new chapter in the social/political history and the formation of the Shiite identity. The main question of this research is how the Shiite identity was formed in contemporary Indonesia? This, in turn, can be examined in three stages. The first stage is externalization (establishment/creation), which begins simultaneously with the Islamic Revolution of Iran and the beginning of the intellectual transformation in carrying out specific Shia customs and rituals in the context of Indonesian society. There is objectification (consolidation), which tries to legitimize its identity by institutionalizing Shiite ideas through organizational activities, and finally, the stage of internalization (growth) means "socialization process" which is replaced by the idea of Islam.
